ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

CLICK HERE to go straight to the ENVIROFERNZ WEBSITE built by students from the Envirofernz Group.

With our bushed gully and stream it is only natural that we take advantage and utilise it.

Starting in 2000 we have cleared immense amounts of weeds and weed trees (privot/acmena) and rubbish.  We have developed a network of paths, constructed teaching areas, gardens, compost areas and planted approximately 7000 native plants/trees.

Other features include:-
Hydroponics Composting
Worm Farms A Trees for Survival Unit
Vegetable Gardens Water Recylcling

We have employed Mrs Nicky Elmore as a EnviroEd Co-ordinator.  She works with all classes on Environmental Education issues including the Gully Project. Meadowbank School is an Enviroschool and has also been involved in the pilot training programme through the Ministry of Education for environmental education guidelines.

Environmental Ed our journey for 2007

What it is to be a Green Gold School

Meadowbank School is a Green/Gold Enviroschool.  This is an achievement that we are very proud of.  However more than the Award itself, we are now beginning to see the benefits in our school and wider community.

What does being a Green/Gold School really mean?

  • The WHOLE SCHOOL is involved in working towards SUSTAINABILITY
  • Transformation of our Gully into the Environmental Trail has created a unique learning and teaching resource.  Children are able to learn IN THE ENVIRONMENT
  • All year groups are involved in an environmental responsibility enabling them to build on their practical skills and pool of knowledge ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
  • They have learning opportunities that enable them to TAKE ACTION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Taking Action for the environment has now moved beyond the school to our broader community:

Children encourage their families to use recyclable bags at the supermarket.

They bring litterless lunches to school

Plant trees to help stop erosion and improve our stream and water quality on rural farmland

All classes have been involved in our VISION and now adopt projects to impliment in the school and community with a sustainability focus

Most importantly through cmmunity, staff and children's input the Meadowbank School's strategic plan now includes "Environmental Education across the curriculum"

Our new Envirofernz Group for 2007 starts week 3 of term and we plan to regularly post the school's environmental activities.
